Q M4 Assignment: Language is Powerful - Hate Speech Case Study [30 minutes] • Due No Due Date • Points 15 • Submitting a text entry box or a file upload "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hut me!" Yeah, right! We have all been hurt by words! Words ARE powerful, and in today's North American culture we are, especially, having more conversations about the power of words because we are seeing firsthand their impact on our society. Take time to reflect on the power of language and YOUR language, specifically, by completing the following steps in this assignment. Directions: Step 1: Read and complete the Case Study in Chapter 4 of our course textbook (p. 93) titled, "It Begins With the Phrase "That's So Gay." (You'll see the Case Study in a beige box.) Type your responses to the three "What Do you Think?" questions in a Microsoft Word document. (Be sure to answer ALL questions embedded in each question.) Step 2: Add to you answer to question #3, which asks you about responding to "hate speech." Specifically, conduct an Internet search on "strategies to responding to hate speech." Pick one strategy that seems helpful and plausible to you, and share it with me. Share it by copying the site's URL and pasting it in your document, as well as discussing why you picked it over all other strategies revealed in your Internet search. Step 3: Answer these final questions before saving and submitting your work: • What "hate speech" have you been guilty of using in the past? • Why did you use it? • How did it make you feel? • What will you tell yourself or do the next time you are tempted to use hateful words?
